Tom Lawlor to play “Richard”

February 23, 2009
Tom Lawlor as The Patient in A Strange Request

Tom Lawlor as The Patient in A Strange Request

One of the more memorable aspects of A Strange Request for me was the opportunity to work with a seasoned professional like Tom Lawlor.  As a first time director I found it a hugely beneficial experience to watch Tom ply his craft and put in a great performance as The Patient: The entire set admired his dedication to the role!

So when it came to writing Toxic Kinda Love I had Tom in mind with every tap of the keyboard as I wrote the part of Richard.  When Tom agreed to play the role after reading the script I was simply stoked to have him aboard.

Roll on April!

Toxic’s Location Manager

February 19, 2009
Jason O'Mahony: Location Manager for Toxic Kinda Love

Jason O'Mahony: Location Manager for Toxic Kinda Love

Jason O’Mahony – art director of Samhlaiocht – has agreed to join the Toxic Kinda Love project as our Location Manager and I can’t tell you how excited I am to have him taking care of this important role.  Jason has worked as a press officer for Sundance, he has encyclopedic knowledge of film, loves a good Choc Ice, he can act, and he’s already coming up with some great ideas for the shoot.

Jason also helped out on our last short A Strange Request and he was one of the few bodies remaining at 2.30am on the final day of filming!

Contact maurice@kerrymedianetwork.net if you’d like to get involved with Toxic Kinda Love and let us know where you see yourself fitting in.  Pre-Production is well under way now and we’re going to shoot in April so if you want in, give us a shout.  Camera (we’re shooting on EX1s) and Lighting positions haven’t been confirmed just yet but we do have interested parties who we’d love to have on-board.

Brian Nolan, George Doyle and Michael Kelly have all offered their help – couldn’t ask for better!!! – so we’ll announce their roles in the very near future but still up for grabs are positions like Sound, Art Director, Make-Up, Camera Assistants, Lighting Assistants, Boom Operators, Runners… All and any help is appreciated so don’t be shy about asking to get involved!

February 16, 2009

There’s still a great buzz about since the screen tests last Friday night and it was hugely beneficial for all concerned.  “Toxic Kinda Love” goes into production in April and not only did we see some exciting acting talent that might like to get involved but we also managed to nail down a Location Manager… more details to follow!

Siamsa Screen Tests

February 15, 2009

Our Screen Test session at the Siamsa last Friday night was a resounding success thanks largely in part to Michael Kelly.

We’ve always known that there is a wealth of acting talent here in the Kingdom and they turned out in force to meet us.  It’s amazing to think how far we’ve come in the past year… for example: our last screen test session managed to drag four people out of their homes one January night.  This time around we had over fifty!

Experienced and talented actors read for us.

For quite some time now we have been actively reaching out to the actors and writers in Kerry in the hope of fostering a strong filmmaking community so all of us at KMN were delighted with the response to our latest networking opportunity.  There was a palpable buzz in the room as actors left their individual screen tests with senses heightened, writers got to meet producers and acting talent, and filmmakers pitched various ideas and possible projects for the future.

Tom Lawlor helped all the actors with their readings… he even managed to make Rory Kirby feel comfortable enough to get on the other side of the camera and perform admirably!

We feel that this event was a huge stepping stone for the filmmaking community and Kerry Media Network are already in discussion about workshops where we bring all talents together: writers can hear their scripts read by actors, directors get the opportunity to work with actors, and actors get to work with everyone and anyone… and a camera!

Future looks bright for young acting talent in Kerry

As already mentioned, Kerry Media Network has several exciting productions in pre-production and “Toxic Kinda Love” goes into production in April (dates to be announced) and everyone feels excited about the possibilities that lay ahead of us.

RED Music Video

February 13, 2009
A RED One has been itching away in FAS, waiting patiently to see some action… So the FAS team gladly took it on its maiden voyage and shot a music video for Kilkenny band ScubaDice.  Apparently, this is one of many versions that will be floating around so we can all look forward to seeing what else the FAS crew come up with!
Shot for 2 x 12hours days over last weekend, the RED was glitch free!
Crew were: Johnathan, Pam, Jack, David, Seamus, Denis, Celene & Martin.
Thanks to FAS and especially Des O’Halloran for being so accommodating.”

Script Reading and Analysis Course

February 13, 2009

gfmGalway Film Centre hosts new Script Reading and Analysis Course

Paula Mulroe (former Head of Development at the Film Board and script editor on The Clinic) tutors this course aimed at those who want to learn how scripts are evaluated professionally by funding organisations and production companies. In each session, you will learn about a particular area for analysis by reading scripts and watching individual films. Each week, you will be asked to write a report on a script taking on board professional criteria outlined and feedback will be given on these.

Course Content:
Funding organisations and production companies when analysing scripts look at the following areas of analysis when choosing scripts to fund or produce.
•    structure
•    characterisation
•    visualisation
•    style
•    tone
•    commercial viability
•    cultural criteria
•    entertainment value/intended audience

This script reading course will therefore aim to inform participants how to analyse and produce reports of a professional standard for industry organisations and companies.

This course will help to give participants a strong insight into why certain scripts are chosen for funding over others. It could also act as a building block towards becoming a script editor. Paula also has international experience including working with the BBC as a senior script editor.

Course Dates:  4 Saturdays, 28th February, 7th, 21st, 28th March
Fee: €455 waged/€420 unwaged (These fees include membership to the Centre for the year)
Limited Places Available.

MxR Solutions For EX1/EX3

February 12, 2009

I’m just back from a weeks trip to the USA where I first came across E-FILMS who are producing an exciting and cheaper alternative to Sony’s grossly overpriced SXS Cards for the EX1/EX3 cameras.

EX Owners have been exploring other options for quite some time now but the best of them have always looked like too much hard work for me… and one can’t close the SXS door of the camera at the end of the process.  Not only that but Kensington have “run out” of adaptors… I doubt Sony have anything to do with that 🙂

Not to worry, this looks like a solution!

E-FILMS have built a SDHC adaptor specially designed for EX1/EX3 owners that are compatible and operate with the door closed. This clever and cost effective invention is called MxR.

Ken Cassidy – a former FAS student – contacted us about these cards but we were and still are in the process of researching them – however, I have spoken to Peter Mee, an Irish video producer who has been using an MxR/SanDisk Ultra II 16GB on his EX1 for several weeks now.

“The SCHD card slips tightly into the adaptor and after that, treat the entire unit as an SxS card,” says Peter. “It slots in to the camera easily and my EX1 the door closes. On first use, the camera prompts to format the card. Thereafter, it records fine. No problems switching slots etc. I imagine if you treat it like an SxS and don’t power down while it’s writing etc., all should be well.  I’ve taken the entire unit out of the camera and slotted it in to the express card slot on my MacBookPro. The Mac sees the card just like an SxS and Sony Clip Browser sees the files and can copy them just fine. I can also extract the SDHC card from the MxR adaptor and read it in a desktop mac via a USB card adaptor (an advantage over SxS where a special Sony unit is required)”

Peter does warn that there’s a few things to be careful of:

1. You can’t overcrank very much using the cards. They are USB based and have a lower data throughput than SxS. If you overcrank, you apparently get data errors.

2. You should not remove the SDHC card from the MxR adapter while it is in the camera.

3. Data transfer from the cards to the computer can be a little slower than from SxS (Pter has not tested this yet but so far has not noticed a significant difference).

So there you have it… an affordable and seemingly reliable alternative to SXS Cards.  I might even buy a couple myself… or wait until Sony drop their outrageous prices!
