Siamsa Screen Tests

February 15, 2009

Our Screen Test session at the Siamsa last Friday night was a resounding success thanks largely in part to Michael Kelly.

We’ve always known that there is a wealth of acting talent here in the Kingdom and they turned out in force to meet us.  It’s amazing to think how far we’ve come in the past year… for example: our last screen test session managed to drag four people out of their homes one January night.  This time around we had over fifty!

Experienced and talented actors read for us.

For quite some time now we have been actively reaching out to the actors and writers in Kerry in the hope of fostering a strong filmmaking community so all of us at KMN were delighted with the response to our latest networking opportunity.  There was a palpable buzz in the room as actors left their individual screen tests with senses heightened, writers got to meet producers and acting talent, and filmmakers pitched various ideas and possible projects for the future.

Tom Lawlor helped all the actors with their readings… he even managed to make Rory Kirby feel comfortable enough to get on the other side of the camera and perform admirably!

We feel that this event was a huge stepping stone for the filmmaking community and Kerry Media Network are already in discussion about workshops where we bring all talents together: writers can hear their scripts read by actors, directors get the opportunity to work with actors, and actors get to work with everyone and anyone… and a camera!

Future looks bright for young acting talent in Kerry

As already mentioned, Kerry Media Network has several exciting productions in pre-production and “Toxic Kinda Love” goes into production in April (dates to be announced) and everyone feels excited about the possibilities that lay ahead of us.

Script Reading and Analysis Course

February 13, 2009

gfmGalway Film Centre hosts new Script Reading and Analysis Course

Paula Mulroe (former Head of Development at the Film Board and script editor on The Clinic) tutors this course aimed at those who want to learn how scripts are evaluated professionally by funding organisations and production companies. In each session, you will learn about a particular area for analysis by reading scripts and watching individual films. Each week, you will be asked to write a report on a script taking on board professional criteria outlined and feedback will be given on these.

Course Content:
Funding organisations and production companies when analysing scripts look at the following areas of analysis when choosing scripts to fund or produce.
•    structure
•    characterisation
•    visualisation
•    style
•    tone
•    commercial viability
•    cultural criteria
•    entertainment value/intended audience

This script reading course will therefore aim to inform participants how to analyse and produce reports of a professional standard for industry organisations and companies.

This course will help to give participants a strong insight into why certain scripts are chosen for funding over others. It could also act as a building block towards becoming a script editor. Paula also has international experience including working with the BBC as a senior script editor.

Course Dates:  4 Saturdays, 28th February, 7th, 21st, 28th March
Fee: €455 waged/€420 unwaged (These fees include membership to the Centre for the year)
Limited Places Available.

Screen Tests For Actors

January 31, 2009

Up for discussion at Thurs meeting was the desire to reach out to the acting community of Kerry.  We have a wealth of theatre talent in the Kingdom but a common complaint is they have little opportunity to perform in front of the camera so we decided to organise some workshops and readings.

Hot on the heels of our discussion, Michael Kelly seized the inititiative and has organised a Screen Test Session which will be held at 5pm in Siamsa Tire, Tralee on Fri Feb 13th.

Screen Test Session at 5pm on Fri 13th of Feb

Siamsa: Screen Test Session at 5pm on Fri 13th of Feb

Actors of all ages and experience are encouraged to come along and perform in front of our cameras.  We also want you to feel as comfortable as possible so we encourage you to read a monologue of your own choosing or alternatively, we can arrange a piece/scene for you to perform. It’s a fantastic opportunity to test ones self under studio conditions, gain some camera experience, or bring yourself to the attention of some of our producers who have exciting projects in the pipeline.

Email maurice@kerrymedianetwork.net or michaelkellykelly@gmail.com for more details about this exciting event.

See you there!
